While enjoying time in a fabric shop, I came upon a large rack of embroidery floss and was stunned by its visual strength. It reminded me of my joy as a young girl, buying hanks of this same thread at the Ben Franklin Five-and-Dime, carefully choosing colors for my latest hand embroidery project.
The display of the colorful materials spoke to me of potential and creative possibility.

I am fascinated that by looking out into the night sky, we are peering back into history, brought to earth at the speed of light. Or, that by walking through a landscape, we can experience geologic forms created by forces through time.
In this series, Wisconsin again comes into view with hiking on various segments of the Ice Age Trail. Here are abstractions of the concepts and images that the landscape and flora conjured.

I began the Fugue series with ideas of overlapping melodies, using pattern, theme and variation to reflect my love of this musical form. J. S. Bach has been a force throughout my life—beautiful, ordered and sturdy.

The concentric diamond pattern has three sources, the first being a traditional American quilt pattern, “Roman Stripe.”
The second is from the Huichol people of western Mexico. “Ojo de Dios” or “Sikuli,” is a ritual object made of yarn and sticks.
The third, “Ogalu,” a design the Igbo women of Nigeria paint on their houses, began as a skin scarification pattern.
I see these common elements as a universal visual language and for me, the connection to a universal experience of keeping a “watchful eye” for our children.
